In a startling claim that has stirred national security concerns, New Jersey Representative Jeff Van Drew has suggested that the mysterious drones spotted over the Garden State are being launched from an Iranian “mothership” positioned off the U.S. East Coast. The claim comes one day after another New Jersey Congressman, Chris Smith, said he believes the drones are foreign operated and sea-based.
Still, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy continues to admit he knows nothing about the drone origins, but says they pose no threat to residents of the Garden State. Murphy reportedly skipped a New Jersey hearing on drone activity today. Republican State Senator Brian Bergen attended the meeting and said it was useless, with no answers being given by any agencies at the meeting.
During an appearance on Fox News with Harris Faulkner, Van Drew, who serves on the Transportation Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee, stated, “Here is the real deal. I’m on the Transportation Committee, on the Aviation Subcommittee, and I’ve gotten to know people. And from very high sources, very qualified sources, very responsible sources. I’m going to tell you… Iran launched a mothership probably about a month ago that contains these drones. That mothership is off the east coast of the United States of America.”
The congressman’s comments come amid widespread reports of unidentified drones flying over New Jersey, where sightings have caused significant public unease. Van Drew elaborated on the potential origins of these drones, dismissing the possibility of them being operated by the U.S. government or hobbyists, and instead focusing on the threat of adversarial nations, particularly Iran.
He further emphasized the urgency of the situation on his social media, posting, “What we’ve uncovered is alarming—drones flying in from the direction of the ocean, possibly linked to a missing Iranian mothership. This is a national security crisis we cannot ignore. Bring them down now.”
Despite Van Drew’s claims, the Pentagon has categorically denied the existence of any such Iranian vessel off American shores. A Pentagon spokesperson commented, “There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there’s no so-called mothership launching drones toward the United States,” directly refuting Van Drew’s allegations.
This discrepancy between the statements from a sitting congressman and the Department of Defense has added layers of complexity to an already mystifying situation. The drones, which have been observed flying in coordinated patterns, have not been identified as belonging to U.S. military or commercial operations, leaving the public and officials searching for answers.
