JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ – A quiet residential street turned into a crime scene Monday morning when an 18-year-old called 911 and was later accused of killing his grandmother inside the home they shared, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Officers arriving at the Justin Way residence just after 7 a.m. found Louis Brown standing at the doorway, surrendering with his hands raised as investigators uncovered a violent scene inside.

Louis Brown is charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon in the death of 69-year-old Darlene Brown. Authorities said the victim was discovered in an upstairs bedroom with two knives “protruding” from her body and multiple stab wounds to her head and neck.

Details from 911 call and arrest

According to law enforcement, Brown placed the 911 call that brought officers to the home. During that call, the caller initially said he was calling “for a murder” before correcting himself to say that “somebody was murdered,” investigators said. Detectives also reported that Brown acknowledged the victim was dead and answered “yea” when asked if he was responsible.

Police said Brown told dispatchers he had been drinking and indicated that the only weapons in the residence were knives. When officers arrived, he exited the residence and surrendered without incident.

Inside the home, investigators documented what they described as extensive evidence of violence, including bloodstains on carpeting, blood in a bathroom sink, and apparent blood spatter on interior walls. Crime scene investigators collected multiple items, including knives, clothing, bedding, and towels.

Investigators outline evidence and prior warnings

Authorities said one knife was lodged in the victim’s face and another in her neck when officers located her. The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office reported the victim suffered at least eight stab wounds to the head and neck.

During a search of the residence, detectives recovered 11 additional knives from Brown’s bedroom and another knife in the victim’s bedroom between a nightstand and bed, according to police.

Investigators also cited prior concerns about Brown’s behavior. School officials reported that he had recently made threatening remarks about wanting to kill people while making a hand motion as if holding a gun. A neighbor told police she heard “blasting loud music” from the home around 1 a.m. the night before the killing, which she described as unusual.

Family members told investigators that Brown had lived with his grandmother for most of his life and did not maintain close relationships with many relatives. The victim’s daughter said she had spoken with him days before the incident and that he appeared withdrawn and “did not seem to be himself,” according to authorities.

Brown remains held at the Ocean County Jail pending further court proceedings.
