South River, NJ- Motorists across New Jersey are urged to observe “Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day,” an initiative aimed at promoting safe driving and lowering traffic-related deaths. Occurring annually on October 10, this nationwide effort encourages drivers and pedestrians to adopt safe habits for a day with the aim of extending these habits year-round.
Residents are encouraged to follow all traffic rules, such as adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, driving sober, and using crosswalks responsibly. The goal is to have a day with no fatalities on New Jersey’s roads, making all road users more vigilant.
The South River Police Department supports this effort with increased monitoring for distracted driving and other infractions. They also plan to educate the public through message boards and social media campaigns leading up to October 10.
In 2017, New Jersey recorded 624 vehicle-related fatalities, a rise from the previous year. Pedestrian deaths stood at 166, accounting for over 27% of the state’s traffic fatalities, significantly higher than the national average of 15%. The state’s #77 alert system continues to be available for reporting dangerous driving behaviors.
