Newark Mourns the Loss of Veteran Police Sergeant Rafael Ramos Jr

NEWARK — The Newark Police Department announced the death of Sergeant Rafael Ramos, Jr., aged 59, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, following an illness. Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé expressed their profound sorrow over his passing.

Sergeant Ramos, a 33-year veteran of the Newark Police Division, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the community. “Sergeant Ramos faithfully served the City of Newark for the past 33 years,” Mayor Baraka remarked, highlighting his dedication to public service. The Mayor extended condolences to Sergeant Ramos’s family and colleagues, acknowledging his invaluable contributions.

Director Fragé reflected on the impact of Sergeant Ramos’s passing on the police community, noting the respect he commanded among his peers. “He was a highly respected supervisor of the Newark Police Division,” said Director Fragé, emphasizing Sergeant Ramos’s humble nature and long-standing tenure.

Joining the force on February 4, 1991, Sergeant Ramos initially served as a patrol officer in the West Ward. His career spanned various roles, including a liaison at the U.S. Marshal Service and positions in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Precincts, the Fugitive Apprehension Team, the Office of Professional Standards, and the Crime Scene Unit, his final assignment. He was promoted to sergeant in 2022 and remained active in duty until his passing.
