NEWARK — The Newark Police Department announced the death of Sergeant Rafael Ramos, Jr., aged 59, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, following an illness. Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé expressed their profound sorrow over his passing.

Sergeant Ramos, a 33-year veteran of the Newark Police Division, was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the community. “Sergeant Ramos faithfully served the City of Newark for the past 33 years,” Mayor Baraka remarked, highlighting his dedication to public service. Joining the force on February 4, 1991, Sergeant Ramos initially served as a patrol officer in the West Ward. He was promoted to sergeant in 2022 and remained active in duty until his passing.
