Driver killed after Jeep crosses median in three vehicle crash in Newark

Newark, DE — A three-vehicle crash on a busy Delaware roadway turned deadly after a Jeep crossed the median and collided with oncoming traffic, leaving one driver dead and another critically injured.

The crash occurred Wednesday at approximately 6:50 p.m. on South College Avenue near Old Baltimore Pike.

Investigators said a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling northbound crossed over the center median for unknown reasons and struck a southbound Chevrolet Silverado. A Subaru Ascent traveling in the same direction was also involved in the collision.

The driver of the Jeep, a 45-year-old man from Newark, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 42-year-old Newark man, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the Subaru, a 42-year-old man from Middletown, was not injured.

The roadway remained closed for approximately five hours as investigators processed the scene.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
