Crossing guard seriously injured after being struck in crosswalk

Parsippany, NJ – A school crossing guard was seriously injured Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while working in a marked crosswalk at a busy Parsippany intersection.

The incident occurred on January 29 around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vail Road and Redstone Drive. Police and Morris County EMS 4 responded to reports of a pedestrian struck and found the victim, identified as Denise Rocco, an on-duty, uniformed Parsippany school crossing guard.

Authorities say Rocco was attempting to stop traffic in the crosswalk when she was hit. She sustained serious injuries and was transported to Morristown Medical Center, where she remains under medical care.

The driver of the vehicle, David Brown, 53, of Lake Hiawatha, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. He was issued three motor vehicle summonses:

  • Failure to stop for a school crossing guard
  • Failure to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk
  • Careless driving

The investigation into the incident remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Parsippany–Troy Hills Police Department.
