Police seize drugs and cache of firearms in Bensalem traffic stop Philadelphia man charged

BENSALEM, Pa. — A routine traffic stop led to the recovery of multiple firearms, suspected narcotics, and drug paraphernalia, resulting in the arrest of a Philadelphia man, Bensalem Township Police announced.

On Saturday, July 19, an officer pulled over a blue Buick Sedan near Street Road and Tillman Drive for illegal window tint. The driver, identified as Robert Cleary, 22, of Bingham Street in Philadelphia, was the vehicle’s sole occupant. Police say they smelled marijuana and saw drug paraphernalia in plain view. Cleary, who did not have a medical marijuana card, refused a vehicle search.

A search of Cleary’s person yielded a straw with suspected drug residue. He was released at the scene, but his vehicle was impounded and secured. A subsequent search warrant, approved by District Justice Gambardella, led to the discovery of the following:

  • A loaded .22 caliber pistol in the center console
  • A loaded 9mm Springfield pistol behind the driver’s seat
  • A Winchester shotgun
  • A FIE revolver
  • A disassembled rifle
  • A loaded extended 9mm magazine (20 rounds)
  • Suspected fentanyl, marijuana, suboxone strips
  • A digital scale and additional drug paraphernalia

Police also confirmed that Cleary did not have a permit to carry a concealed firearm and that one of the handguns had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Philadelphia in March.

On Thursday, July 24, Cleary surrendered to Bensalem Police with his attorney. He was arraigned by District Justice Michael Gallagher and remanded to Bucks County Correctional Facility on 10% of $200,000 bail.

Cleary faces charges including carrying a firearm without a license, receiving stolen property, possession of controlled substances, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
