Road rage dispute escalates to Myrtle Beach shooting, North Carolina man charged

A roadside argument between two drivers ended in gunfire, leaving one person hospitalized and a North Carolina man facing multiple felony charges.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – A Friday evening dispute between motorists in a busy Myrtle Beach corridor escalated into a shooting that left one person injured and prompted the arrest of a 34-year-old North Carolina man, according to police.

Kevin Lamar McCoy, of Autryville, North Carolina, has been charged with aggravated assault and battery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful possession of a firearm following the incident, which unfolded around 5:38 p.m. in the parking lot at 7925 North Kings Highway.

One individual sustained injuries in the shooting and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where they are recovering, authorities said.

Incident began as roadside dispute

Investigators said the confrontation began as a disagreement between two motorists and escalated into a physical altercation in the parking lot. According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department, “the incident began as a disagreement between two motorists that escalated into a physical altercation at the location.”

Police said that after the altercation, the victim attempted to create distance from the situation when the shooting occurred. “Following the altercation, the victim was distancing himself when McCoy fired multiple rounds from a shotgun from inside the vehicle, striking the victim,” the department stated.

Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat tied to the incident. “There is no known ongoing threat to the community, as investigators believe this to be an isolated and random incident,” police said.

Investigation remains active

The Myrtle Beach Police Department said the case remains under investigation and additional details could emerge as detectives continue to gather evidence.
