Route 18 Closure and Detour Notice for East Brunswick Pavement Project

April 5, 2024

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced upcoming closures and detours on Route 18 due to a significant pavement project in East Brunswick, Middlesex County. Originally set for April 4, the work has been rescheduled due to bad weather.

For northbound travelers, Route 18 will be closed from Cranbury Road to West Ferris Street starting at 9:30 PM tonight, Friday, April 5, until 4:30 AM on Saturday, April 6. This closure will repeat on Monday night, April 8, during the same hours to facilitate water main work. A detour will guide northbound traffic via Cranbury Road, Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527, and back to Route 18 via West Ferris Street.

Southbound Route 18 will also be closed from Cranbury Road to Arthur Street, beginning at 11 PM tonight, Friday, April 5, until 6 AM on Saturday, April 6, with a similar closure scheduled for Monday night, April 8. Southbound motorists will be directed through a detour route that includes the jughandle to West Ferris Street/All Turns, Old Bridge Turnpike/CR 527, and Arthur Street, leading back to Route 18.

These closures are part of the $86.1 million Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project, funded federally. The project spans roughly four and a half miles of Route 18 and aims to improve drainage systems, storm water basins, utility relocations, and the installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps, among other upgrades. Intersection improvements are also slated throughout the project area, which is expected to conclude in fall 2026.
