Sections of Ortley Beach to Remain Closed Through Memorial Day Due To Erosion

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Portions of Ortley Beach that were badly eroded in last weekend’s nor’easter storm will be closed to the public when the official start of the Jersey Shore summer begins on Memorial Day Weekend. Toms River Mayor Maurice Hill was hoping the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would help the community out after tons of sand was washed away leaving dangerous, high cliffs along the dune system.

Hill, in an interview with NJ.com said 75% of the beach will be open, but the rest will be closed off until the town approves $200,000 in beach sand to be dumped back on the beach.

Some of those cliffs are as high as 5 to 6 feet, Hill said, adding that those areas of the beach will be closed until at least mid-June.
