COCKEYSVILLE, Md. — A Nottingham man’s quiet lunch break turned into a $57,777 payday when a scratch-off ticket he bought on a whim revealed a top prize, Maryland Lottery officials said Wednesday.

The winner said he usually has lunch with co-workers who frequently play the Lottery, but on a recent day he ate alone at the Ashland Café at 10810 York Road in Cockeysville. To pass the time, he purchased four scratch-off tickets, including a Lucky 7s Tripler.

After returning to work, he scratched the tickets and discovered the Lucky 7s Tripler had an auto-win symbol worth $57,777. He later confirmed the prize using the Lottery’s mobile app and shared the news with his wife and friends.

He said the winnings will help with his children’s tuition, financial planning, and retirement savings.

The Ashland Café will also receive a $577.77 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
