Speeding Jeep Runs Red Light, Killing Two in Violent Philadelphia Intersection Crash

High-Speed Jeep Crash Kills Lexus Driver and Passenger in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A late-night crash in Philadelphia’s 24th District left two people dead after a Jeep allegedly sped through a red light and slammed into another vehicle at a busy intersection, authorities said.

The violent collision happened around 11:36 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of K Street and East Hunting Park Avenue, according to Philadelphia police.

Investigators said a green 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on East Hunting Park Avenue at a high rate of speed when the driver ignored a steady red signal and crashed into a gold 2004 Lexus ES330 traveling southbound on K Street with the right of way.

The impact caused catastrophic damage to the Lexus and heavily damaged the front end of the Jeep, leaving both vehicles disabled in the intersection.

Emergency crews from the Philadelphia Fire Department arrived shortly after midnight Sunday and found the occupants of the Lexus critically injured.

Police said the Lexus driver, a 60-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene around 12 a.m. A 55-year-old man riding in the vehicle was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he died approximately 15 minutes later.

Speed and Red-Light Violation Under Investigation

Authorities said the occupants of the Jeep survived the collision with non-life-threatening injuries.

Medics transported the Jeep’s driver, a 23-year-old woman, to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition with head trauma. A 25-year-old male passenger was also hospitalized in stable condition with a minor head laceration and complaints of pain.

Investigators said preliminary evidence indicates the Jeep entered the intersection against a red light moments before the crash.

The intersection of K Street and East Hunting Park Avenue sits in a heavily traveled section of North Philadelphia where overnight speeding crashes have remained a recurring concern for residents and law enforcement.

Key Points

• Two people died after a Jeep allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a Lexus in Philadelphia
• Police said the Jeep was traveling at a high rate of speed before the collision
• The two occupants of the Jeep survived with non-life-threatening injuries

Crash Left Lexus Destroyed

The broadside collision caused devastating damage to the Lexus, underscoring the force of the impact.

Fatal side-impact crashes are often among the deadliest types of collisions because occupants have less structural protection when struck directly from the side.

Police have not released the identities of the victims pending family notification.

Investigators also have not said whether impairment, distraction, or other factors may have contributed to the crash beyond the reported speed and red-light violation.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Authorities continue reconstructing the collision and reviewing evidence from the scene.

No charges had been announced as of Sunday evening.

The Philadelphia Police Department is expected to continue examining surveillance footage, vehicle data, and witness statements as the investigation moves forward.
