Trash-bound ticket turns into $50,000 surprise win in Beltsville

Ticket pulled from trash turns into $50,000 jackpot

Beltsville, MD — A lottery ticket that nearly ended up in the trash delivered a $50,000 prize after a last-second decision to keep it paid off for a Prince George’s County player.

The winning Pick 5 ticket was purchased April 15 at a 7-Eleven located at 11422 Cherry Hill Road. The player initially intended to buy a boxed bet, but a clerk mistakenly printed a straight bet ticket with the numbers 42766.

The ticket was briefly discarded and nearly canceled before the player retrieved it from the trash. Later that same day, the ticket matched the evening drawing numbers, resulting in a $50,000 prize.

The Beltsville man, who previously won $100,000 in Washington, D.C., claimed the prize April 24 at Maryland Lottery headquarters alongside his wife.

The couple said the winnings will go toward planned home improvements, including patio and basement work that had already been scheduled prior to the win.

The retailer that sold the ticket will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
