Trump blasts Colorado officials, demands release of Tina Peters from prison

PALM BEACH, FL – President Donald Trump called for the release of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, condemning Colorado officials and labeling her imprisonment a political injustice.

In a social media post Tuesday, Trump said Peters, 73, is serving a nine-year sentence in a Colorado maximum-security prison for what he described as the “crime” of trying to stop voter fraud. He directed his anger toward Colorado’s governor and district attorney, calling them “scumbag” and “disgusting” while claiming the state’s mail-in ballot system disadvantages Republicans.

Peters, who served as Mesa County Clerk from 2019 to 2023, was convicted on charges connected to a security breach of election equipment following the 2020 presidential race. She was suspended by the Colorado Secretary of State in 2021 and later found guilty of attempting to influence a public official and misconduct.

Trump’s post ended with the phrase “FREE TINA PETERS!” as he repeated unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud in Colorado’s elections.
