Update: Teen Driver Charged in Fatal Hit and Run Crash that Killed Brick Freshman Student on Bicycle

BRICK, N.J. — A Brick Township High School freshman riding a bicycle near campus died Monday morning after a speeding BMW struck him in a marked crosswalk and fled the scene, according to investigators who later tracked the damaged vehicle to a nearby neighborhood.

The crash happened around 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue, an area students frequently travel before school. Ocean County prosecutors said the teenage driver never stopped to help the victim or call police after the collision. Investigators later identified the victim as a freshman at Brick Township High School.

Authorities said surveillance video captured the BMW after the crash in a nearby residential area, where the driver and a passenger allegedly inspected the damage before leaving again.

Teen Driver Taken Into Custody

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said Tuesday that a juvenile suspect has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death.

Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined the 2021 BMW traveled northbound through the intersection “at a high rate of speed” when it hit the bicyclist, who was crossing westbound on Rhode Island Avenue inside a marked crosswalk.

The student died at the scene before emergency responders could transport him to a hospital.

Key Points

• Brick Township High School freshman killed Monday morning while riding bicycle in crosswalk
• Prosecutors say speeding BMW driver fled scene without stopping to help
• Juvenile suspect charged and held at Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center

The case quickly drew attention across Brick Township because of the location and timing of the crash, which happened during the morning commute near the high school campus.

Investigators used evidence collected at the intersection, along with surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, to identify the vehicle involved. According to officials, the BMW appeared on video after the collision parked in a nearby neighborhood, where occupants were seen examining damage to the vehicle before walking away from the vehicle.

Authorities have not publicly identified the juvenile victim or the accused driver because of New Jersey laws governing minors.

Community Shocked by Crash Near School

The fatal collision unfolded at an intersection familiar to many Brick families and students. The area around Lanes Mill Road sees heavy traffic during school mornings, with bicyclists and pedestrians regularly crossing toward nearby neighborhoods and school grounds.

Prosecutors said the victim had been traveling through a marked crosswalk when the BMW struck him. Witnesses said the BMW was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed before the crash, subsequently fleeing the scene.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer credited multiple agencies for helping identify the driver and piece together the moments after the crash.

“Prosecutor Billhimer commends the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Township Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their combined and collaborative efforts in connection with this investigation,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The juvenile suspect remains detained at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center. Under New Jersey law, additional details about juveniles charged with delinquency offenses cannot be released publicly.

Investigation Continues After Fatal Hit-and-Run

The investigation remains active as detectives continue reviewing surveillance footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence tied to the BMW involved in the crash.

The death has intensified concern about speeding and student safety around Brick Township schools, particularly during early morning hours when traffic increases near intersections used by students walking or biking to class.

Officials have not announced whether additional charges could be filed. The juvenile charged in the crash remains in custody pending further proceedings in family court.
