Georgetown woman jumps into bay after low-speed police chase and failed escape

GEORGETOWN, DE – A 40-year-old woman led Delaware State Police on a bizarre low-speed pursuit through Sussex County on Friday, ending with her jumping into Rehoboth Bay in a failed attempt to flee capture.

Lindsey Moncavage was behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 around 4 p.m. when she allegedly nearly struck another vehicle while turning onto Bay Farm Road from John J. Williams Highway. A detective with the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Moncavage refused to pull over, sparking a pursuit through the Long Neck area.

The chase unfolded at a low rate of speed across several local streets, during which a female passenger reportedly attempted to escape from the moving truck but was initially unsuccessful. She eventually managed to jump from the vehicle while it was on Sloan Road, suffering a minor injury.

The pursuit came to an end in the Pinewater Farm community when the truck crashed into a fence and tree. Moncavage fled on foot and dove into Rehoboth Bay in a last-ditch effort to evade arrest. A trooper followed her into the water and was able to apprehend and safely bring her ashore.

Police say a search of the vehicle revealed drug paraphernalia. A background check showed Moncavage’s license had been revoked and she was also wanted for a probation violation.

Moncavage was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later taken to Troop 4, where she was formally charged and arraigned. She was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on a secured bond of $5,504.
