BRONX, NY – A 69-year-old man was assaulted on a Bronx subway platform Friday morning after a verbal argument broke out when he was asked to open an emergency exit gate, according to the NYPD.

The incident occurred just after 11 a.m. on the northbound platform of the #2 train at the Westchester Avenue station, within the 40th Precinct and Transit District 12. Authorities say an unidentified individual approached the victim and requested that he open the emergency gate. When the victim refused, a dispute escalated into violence.

The attacker struck the elderly man in the face and body before fleeing the platform by boarding a northbound #2 train. The victim’s injuries have not been detailed and it is unclear whether he received medical attention on site or was transported elsewhere.

Police are working to identify the suspect, who remains at large. Surveillance footage has not yet been released, but the investigation is ongoing.
