Mother lowers baby from second-floor window to escape Cecil County house fire

CECIL COUNTY, MD – A mother was forced to drop her baby from a second-story window and crawl through flames herself during a terrifying house fire that tore through a home in the middle of the night, leaving six people displaced and three hospitalized.

The fire broke out Sunday night in a two-story residence in Cecil County, with flames quickly engulfing the upper level. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the mother was trapped upstairs with her child and had no way out. In a desperate move, she lowered the baby out the window to safety before escaping herself through thick smoke and fire.

The woman, her baby, and her husband were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been released. All residents inside the home were able to get out before the structure was fully compromised, officials said.

Firefighters from Singerly Fire Company arrived and managed to contain the flames before they spread beyond the structure. Investigators believe the fire began on the second floor but have not yet determined the exact cause.

The Northeast Regional Office of the State Fire Marshal is leading the investigation, and damage assessments are ongoing. Six individuals were displaced due to the fire, and emergency assistance is being coordinated.
