MANHATTAN, NY – A New York City Police Department officer has been recently indicted in an assault case stemming from a 2021 incident. Officer Juan Perez, 42, who is stationed at the 6th Precinct, stands accused of punching an individual six times in the face, resulting in substantial injuries including a broken nose and bruising around the eyes.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. disclosed the indictment on Tuesday, charging Perez with one count of Assault in the Third Degree.
The case dates back to November 10, when Perez and his partner were dispatched to address a report of a person behaving erratically at the intersection of Bleecker and Sullivan Street.
During the encounter on MacDougal Street, Perez and the victim engaged in a physical altercation, which ended in Perez striking the victim multiple times in the face. The individual was later hospitalized, where they were treated for a broken nose and significant swelling.
Perez is a Brooklyn resident, currently charged with one count of Assault in the Third Degree, a class A misdemeanor. The case is ongoing and is supervised by Assistant D.A. Nick Viorst, Chief of the Police Accountability Unit.
