Man Dies Following Deputy-Involved Shooting in Amherst County

AMHERST COUNTY, VA – A fatal deputy-involved shooting took place near the intersection of Lexington Turnpike/Route 60 and Sandidges Road on Thursday, as reported by the Virginia State Police. An Amherst County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call around 2:40 pm regarding a man reportedly behaving erratically.

The man confronted the deputy with a machete when the officer arrived at the scene. In response, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking the man.

Despite the immediate life-saving measures taken at the scene, the man later succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff Viar disclosed that the deputy involved in the incident was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The incident is currently under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
