QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Wednesday the indictment of Yaser Ibrahim, 18, of Levittown, on charges related to a fatal car crash in Astoria.

The accident resulted in the death of Jaydan McLaurin, a 16-year-old bicyclist from Long Island City.

On April 10, McLaurin was riding an electric Citi Bike through the intersection of 21st Street and 21st Avenue in Astoria when he was struck by a 2022 BMW X7 going south. Ibrahim admitted to driving at approximately twice the 25 mph speed limit and leaving the scene.

The SUV was later found several blocks away from the collision site with significant damage to the bumper and windshield.

Ibrahim, who only had a learner’s permit and could not produce a valid driver’s license or insurance, was arraigned in Queens Supreme Court on an 11-count indictment. If convicted, Ibrahim could face up to 5 to 15 years in prison. The next hearing is set for July 20.
