U.S. Capitol Police are responding to reports of an active shooter alert in the United States Capitol Complex, according to an alert issued on Wednesday.

The alert was specific to the Senate office buildings north of the U.S. Capitol Building itself.

“Our officers are searching in and around the Senate Office Buildings in response to a concerning 911 call. Please stay away from the area as we are still investigating. We will continue to communicate with the public here,” the Capitol Police tweeted.

The Russell Senate Office building’s rotunda, where media broadcasts are often held, was evacuated by tactical units, according to CNN.

Lawmakers are currently away from the Capitol over the August recess, with only congressional staff occupying the buildings.

The Capitol Police and Senate Sergeant at Arms’ office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
