WATERFORD TWP, NJ – Firefighters from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Forest Fire Service are battling a significant wildfire in the area of Jackson Rd. and the Atco Dragway in the Wharton State Forest.

Known as the Dragway Wildfire, the blaze has already consumed 200 acres and is only 5% contained as of the latest reports. The fire’s rapid spread has prompted a swift response from local fire departments and emergency services.

The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation, and authorities are urging local residents and visitors to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles unimpeded access. Road closures and detours are in place, and further updates are anticipated as containment efforts continue.

Wharton State Forest, part of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, is a recreational area known for its unique ecosystem.

The fire was first reported Sunday evening at around 4:30 pm.
