Near-Miss for Billion-Dollar Jackpot: Virginia Man Wins $1 Million in Powerball Drawing

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Carlos Gutierrez, a small business owner from Centreville, won $1 million in the Powerball drawing on October 9 after purchasing a ticket at Lee’s Sandwiches in Falls Church.

Gutierrez bought the ticket while waiting for his morning coffee and chicken sandwich. The winning numbers for the drawing were 16-34-46-55-67, with a Powerball number of 14. Gutierrez’s ticket matched the first five numbers, falling just short of the estimated $1.55 billion jackpot. Gutierrez revealed he had initially picked all six winning numbers but changed the Powerball number to 19 at the last moment.
