Newport News Police Detectives Continue Search for Killer of 18-Year-Old Devonte Burris

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Newport News Police Department is seeking public assistance in solving a homicide that occurred on September 3, 2023.

At approximately 8:30 PM, officers responded to a shooting report in the 500 block of Catina Way. Upon arrival, they were informed by a resident that an 18-year-old male, identified as Davonte Burris, had entered his home seeking help after being shot. Burris unfortunately succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Investigation revealed that the incident occurred shortly after Burris exited a Lyft vehicle. Video surveillance captured an individual on a BMX-style bicycle approaching the area. This individual was recorded firing at Burris and then fleeing the scene on the bicycle.

The Newport News Police Department is actively pursuing leads and urges anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.
