The U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, along with the Department of Justice’s litigating divisions, play a crucial role in enforcing and collecting debts owed to the U.S. and to victims of federal crimes. Defendants are legally required to compensate victims suffering physical or financial harm due to federal crimes. While restitution directly benefits the victims, criminal fines and assessments contribute to the Crime Victims Fund. This fund supports compensation and assistance programs for victims at both federal and state levels.
