Bronx, NY – A Rikers Island inmate has been indicted for attempted murder following a brutal assault that left another detainee requiring open heart surgery. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the indictment of Shane Delisle, 25, for the attack that involved stabbing the victim with a 7-inch plexiglass shard.

The incident, which occurred on December 20, 2023, at the George R. Vierno Center, was captured on video. It showed Delisle allegedly attacking Charles Satterwhite, a fellow inmate, with the makeshift weapon. Quick intervention by Department of Correction Officers, who used pepper spray to stop the assault, potentially saved Satterwhite’s life. Satterwhite underwent critical surgery at Elmhurst Hospital following the attack.

Delisle, who has been charged with attempted murder, assault, promoting prison contraband, and criminal possession of a weapon, was remanded during his arraignment before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Brenda Rivera. He is scheduled for another court appearance on May 14, 2024. This case highlights the severe violence that can occur within prison walls.
