Fire at Newton Home Caused by Oily Rags, Investigation Finds

Firefighters were dispatched to a residence on Central Avenue at 11:30 a.m. due to smoke emanating from the 2-and-a-half-story wood-framed home last Wednesday.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered heavy flames on the upper level, prompting the escalation of the fire to three alarms. It took several hours to completely extinguish the blaze, which investigators believe began due to a container of oily rags igniting near the top of a staircase on the second floor. thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office emphasized the importance of safe disposal of rags used for painting, staining, or varnishing.
