Cumberland Man Arrested for Assault Over Cigarette Dispute

CUMBERLAND, MD—A local man was arrested on charges of assault after allegedly attacking another man during an argument over a cigarette. The incident occurred on Monday, June 24, in the area of Baltimore St.

James William Roy, 40, was identified and apprehended by the Cumberland Police Department following the assault. According to reports, officers were flagged down by the injured victim on N. Mechanic St. The victim, who had suffered a laceration to the neck, told officers that the altercation began after he refused to give Roy a cigarette. The refusal reportedly led Roy to cut the victim’s throat before fleeing the scene on foot.

Emergency medical services were promptly called to the scene, and the victim was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Thanks to a detailed description provided by the victim, police were able to locate and arrest Roy later that evening.

Roy faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, providing a false name to avoid prosecution, and obstructing and hindering. He was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center to await his initial court appearance.
