SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Animal welfare groups are offering a $6,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the individual responsible for the abuse and wounding of a dog found in Schenectady last month. The dog, named Lavender by rescuers, was discovered on March 29 near Eastern Parkway and McClellan Street.

Key Points

  • A $6,000 reward is being offered for tips leading to the prosecution of the abuser of a dog found injured in Schenectady.
  • Lavender, the dog, is under veterinary care at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.
  • One arrest has been made for abandonment, but the cause of the dog’s injuries remains under investigation.

Lavender was found by good Samaritans who alerted authorities. She was then transported by Schenectady Police Animal Control to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), where she continues to receive medical care. Officials said she showed signs of neglect and physical trauma.

Animal Nation, Partners in Animal Welfare (PAW), and a private donor collectively announced the $6,000 reward. The New York State Humane Association has separately pledged an additional $1,000 for information that leads to both arrest and conviction.

Arrest made, but case remains open

Police confirmed that an arrest was made on April 4 in connection with the dog’s abandonment. However, investigators are still working to determine how Lavender sustained her injuries and who is directly responsible.

Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Schenectady Police Department Detective Division at 518-382-5245 or the Tips Line at 518-788-6566.

The department has seen an “outpouring of support” from the local community and statewide animal advocacy groups, according to the release. They also thanked the MHHS for its ongoing partnership in the case.

Humane groups rally behind investigation

Photos released by investigators show the dog with visible injuries, reinforcing the urgency of the appeal for public assistance. Law enforcement and humane law officers from the MHHS continue to work jointly on the case.

The investigation remains active as officials pursue leads to hold the individual or individuals responsible for Lavender’s injuries accountable.
