NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Nearly two years after three men were found shot to death inside a Newport News residence, police have made an arrest in the case, authorities announced Wednesday.

The deadly shooting took place on August 8, 2023, around 12:55 a.m. in the 400 block of Stallings Court. Officers responding to a report of gunfire discovered the bodies of three adult male victims. All were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims were identified as Alvin Eugene Holiday, 61, and Monroe McGilvary Jr., 60, both of Williamsburg, and Derek Rico Jones, 36, of Newport News.

Following what police called an “extensive investigation,” Dimair Jones, 26, of Newport News, was taken into custody without incident on Tuesday. He has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and three counts of use of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“NNPD’s homicide detectives have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to solving this case,” said Chief Steve Drew in an official statement.

Suspect in custody

Jones is being held in connection with one of the city’s most high-profile unsolved cases. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or details on how the suspect was identified during the nearly 20-month-long investigation.

The Newport News Police Department thanked the community for its patience and support throughout the investigation, but did not release further information regarding the events leading up to the shooting or any possible connections between the suspect and the victims.
