MOUNT AIRY, MD — The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Saturday night on Interstate 70 in Frederick County.
The victim has been identified as Eduardo Alexander Alvarado Urrea, 20, of Silver Spring. Emergency medical services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Troopers from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack responded to the incident at approximately 11:55 p.m. on June 14 after receiving reports of a shooting on eastbound I-70 near Maryland Route 27.
Police located a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck at the scene. Inside the vehicle were Urrea and five others. The driver was transported to a trauma center with gunshot wounds. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity. One passenger declined medical treatment after being evaluated on scene, while the remaining three occupants were uninjured.
Preliminary investigation and appeal for information
According to investigators, the shooting occurred shortly after the group had departed from an event at the Frederick Fairgrounds around 11:40 p.m. The victims were struck by gunfire from another vehicle traveling eastbound on I-70.
Maryland State Police are seeking assistance from the public. “Anyone with dashcam footage on eastbound I-70 in Frederick County between 11:30 p.m. and midnight is asked to contact the Frederick Barrack at 301-600-4150,” police said. Authorities are also encouraging anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to identify suspects and determine a motive.
