Entangled seal pup rescued after entanglement at island beach state park

ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK, NJ – A young male Grey seal, entangled in a polypropylene line, was saved and treated by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) today, marking the third such incident this season.

The seal, discovered in a distressed state at Island Beach State Park, had the line embedded deep into his neck. Upon receiving the urgent call, the MMSC team acted swiftly to transport the seal to their hospital, where a veterinarian was prepared for immediate intervention.

The removal of the entanglement was successful, revealing a significant wound approximately one inch deep and 15cm in length. Despite the severity, the seal’s injuries were promptly addressed, with treatments initiated to prevent infection and aid in a comfortable recovery.

Weighing in at 51.8 pounds upon intake, the seal pup is now receiving supportive care, including tube feeding with electrolytes for hydration and formula for nourishment. This care is critical for his rehabilitation and eventual return to the wild.

The MMSC extends its gratitude to the community for their ongoing support, which has been instrumental in the rescue and treatment of these vulnerable marine animals. The center encourages further donations to support their mission in providing second chances to injured marine wildlife.
