PUYALLUP, WA – A domestic dispute escalated into a fatal shooting Wednesday morning when a man allegedly opened fire on his stepdaughters, killing one and wounding another, before being shot dead by a neighbor who intervened, according to police. The violence unfolded after the altercation spilled out of a home and onto a nearby driveway and garage, drawing multiple witnesses and leaving a neighborhood shaken.
Authorities identified the man as Arnino Guanlao, 47. Police said Guanlao was armed with a handgun and firing at his adult stepdaughters when a neighboring homeowner stepped in and shot him. One of the women, 23-year-old Christiannel Lyle Macapagal Maningat, died at the scene. Her sister survived but was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Domestic dispute turns deadly
“There were three family members involved in a domestic situation,” Puyallup Police Capt. Kevin Gill told reporters. “It spilled outside of the house and ended up in the neighbor’s driveway or garage area. One of the family members ended up shooting two other adult family members.”
Gill said the situation escalated quickly as gunfire rang out in the residential area. Residents reported hearing around 10 shots during the incident.
“The homeowner of the neighboring house intervened, and the suspect was shot by the homeowner,” Gill said. “We’re interviewing a lot of witnesses who, as you can imagine, are quite distraught.”
Witness Michelle Weingarden-Bandes described the aftermath, recounting the neighbor’s repeated statements following the shooting. “He was going to shoot the kids,” she said. “He just kept saying, ‘He was going to shoot the kids.'” She added, “I think he’s in shock, and he kept saying, ‘I have my gun, my gun’s still on me, my gun’s still on me,’ and that was about all he kept saying.”
Investigation into use of force
Police said the neighbor is cooperating with investigators as authorities examine whether the use of deadly force was legally justified under Washington law. Under state law, deadly force may be used if a person reasonably believes they are facing serious harm or death.
“That’s under investigation, as to exactly how the circumstances took place,” Gill said.
Officials have not disclosed what sparked the initial dispute inside the home.
Family remembers victim
Maningat’s family described her as a central figure in their lives, emphasizing her care for others. “She was like the ‘mom’ in every situation, always checking on people and making sure everyone was okay,” the family said in a statement. “She was just a really lovable person, and so many people loved her deeply.”
A GoFundMe organized in her memory called the incident “a devastating act of domestic violence” and “a tragedy that no family should ever have to endure.” The fundraiser also noted the broader impact on the family, stating, “Everything about their lives changed in a matter of moments.”
Maningat and her injured sister are among four siblings, with the others now facing what the fundraiser described as “fear, confusion, and heartbreak that no words can fully explain.”
