TRENTON, N.J. — Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Spadea has pledged to make ivermectin available over the counter in New Jersey if elected, aligning himself with similar efforts in other states.
Spadea made the announcement Wednesday on social media, responding to Pennsylvania State Senator Doug Mastriano’s proposal to allow over-the-counter sales of the antiparasitic drug. “Let’s bring this to Jersey. Day. One,” Spadea wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ivermectin is an FDA-approved drug primarily used to treat parasitic infections such as river blindness, scabies, and lice. Mastriano’s proposal cites its long history of safe use and argues that increasing access would reduce healthcare burdens and improve public health, particularly in rural areas.
Tennessee has already passed legislation allowing over-the-counter sales of ivermectin, and other states are considering similar measures.
Spadea, a former radio host and conservative commentator, has made healthcare access a key issue in his campaign as he seeks the Republican nomination for New Jersey governor.
