SPRINGDALE, PA – Springdale Borough Police have released final details for the scheduled implosion of the boiler house at the former Cheswick Power Plant. The event is set for Friday, September 22, and will commence shortly after 8 AM, provided that all safety protocols are met.
Multiple road closures and detours will begin at 5 AM on the day of the implosion. Streets affected include Chestnut Street, Duquesne Court, and many others. Freeport Road and Pittsburgh Street will be entirely shut down starting at 7 AM. Signs will be posted, and uniformed police will direct traffic.
Residents will be able to leave the affected areas between 5 AM and 7 AM. After 7 AM, movement in or out of the area will be restricted until the operation is deemed safe. Strict enforcement will be in place for anyone violating this directive.
The public is urged to cooperate with both the police department and contractors involved in the operation, as all actions are aimed at minimizing inconvenience and ensuring safety.
Evacuation, shelter-in-place, and full exclusion zones have been mapped out. The evacuation zone requires all structures and residences to be emptied. Those in the shelter-in-place zone must remain indoors until given the all-clear. The full exclusion zone outlines areas where outdoor presence is prohibited to prevent exposure to noise, dust, or other potential hazards.
