Gaithersburg grandmother wins $100K on scratch off picked out by daughter

A Maryland woman stayed calm after scratching off a $100K winner, but her daughter said she nearly fell out of her chair when she saw the prize.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — A Gaithersburg grandmother’s prediction that she would one day hit it big finally came true after her daughter brought home a lottery ticket that turned into a $100K prize.

The Montgomery County woman claimed the top prize on the Maryland Lottery’s $10 Scratch & Match scratch-off game on Monday.

According to the Maryland Lottery, the winner’s daughter had gone out to buy sympathy flowers following the recent death of a family member and also picked up several scratch-off tickets for her mother.

“I always buy the tickets for her and bring them home for her to play,” the daughter told lottery officials.

The tickets were purchased at the Giant grocery store at 18250 Flower Hill Way in Gaithersburg. The daughter said she chose the Scratch & Match ticket simply because it was “purple and pretty.”

The first ticket her mother scratched turned out to be the $100K top-prize winner.

The winner said she noticed she had matched one of the winning numbers and realized she had something special.

“When I saw how much it was, I almost fell out of my chair,” the daughter told lottery officials. “Mom was so calm, I think she was in shock, but I went crazy.”

After celebrating, the winner called her other daughter, who helped make arrangements to claim the prize.

The grandmother said she plans to use some of her winnings to take a trip to New York City and visit the Statue of Liberty. The rest of the money will be deposited in the bank.

The Giant store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

Scratch & Match debuted in March, and five $100K top prizes remain unclaimed, according to lottery officials.
