Gun discharges inside Glen Burnie elementary classroom leaving student injured

Glen Burnie, MD – A school morning was abruptly disrupted when a handgun brought by a student discharged inside an elementary school classroom, injuring the child and prompting an immediate response from officers and school officials.

The incident occurred Wednesday at approximately 8:25 a.m. at Freetown Elementary School, located at 7904 Freetown Road. Officers responding to the scene were told a student had brought a handgun to school and that the weapon discharged inside a classroom. The student who brought the weapon was injured during the discharge.

School officials said the classroom teacher secured the handgun, provided aid to the injured student, and alerted administrators, who then contacted police. Other students were inside the classroom at the time of the discharge, but none were harmed. Once the weapon was secured, officials confirmed there was no further threat to student safety.

The injured student was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Authorities said the injuries were not life-threatening.
