Antisemitic graffiti found at Olney synagogue as police increase patrols

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Antisemitic phrases and symbols were discovered spray-painted on signs outside an Olney synagogue Tuesday morning, prompting an active investigation and increased patrols in the area, police said.

Officers from the Montgomery County Police 4th District responded at approximately 8 a.m. to Shaare Tefila Synagogue, located in the 16600 block of Georgia Avenue, after receiving reports of vandalism.

According to investigators, the graffiti was applied during the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday. Multiple signs at the front of the synagogue were defaced with antisemitic language and symbols.

Detectives are canvassing the surrounding neighborhood and reviewing surveillance footage in an effort to identify those responsible.

Police said patrols in the area have been increased as the investigation continues.
