Teen arrested in Southeast DC attempted robbery involving two guns

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery inside a Southeast apartment building where a victim was struck with a firearm during a shoe sale meeting, police said Tuesday.

The incident occurred December 30 at approximately 3:58 p.m. in the hallway of an apartment building in the 1600 block of W Street Southeast. According to investigators, the victim had arranged to meet someone at the location to purchase shoes.

During the interaction, two additional suspects approached, one of whom was armed with two firearms. When the victim attempted to flee, one of the suspects struck the victim with a gun and attempted to take the victim’s vehicle keys, police said.

The suspects were unsuccessful in taking the keys. The victim was able to escape, drive away, and later flag down officers for assistance.

On Monday, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, 18-year-old McKinley McClain of Northeast, D.C., was arrested and charged with assault with intent to commit robbery while armed.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for violent crimes in the District.

The charge is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
