Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park has expanded its offerings with a new fly fishing section, giving anglers interested in the growing sport a local place to find flies, tying materials and beginner essentials.

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. — Grumpy’s Tackle has introduced a dedicated fly fishing section at its longtime Jersey Shore bait and tackle shop, responding to customer demand as interest in the sport continues to grow along the New Jersey coast.

The Seaside Park shop announced this week that customers can now purchase both pre-tied flies and materials for tying their own, with additional products available in-store and online.

  • Grumpy’s Tackle has added a new fly fishing section at its Seaside Park store.
  • The shop now offers pre-tied flies and fly-tying materials for beginners and experienced anglers.
  • Staff say they can help newcomers get started with the equipment they need.

A new option for Jersey Shore anglers

While fly fishing is often associated with freshwater rivers and mountain streams, it has become increasingly popular in saltwater environments, including the Jersey Shore, where anglers target striped bass, bluefish, false albacore and other coastal species using specialized fly rods and hand-tied patterns.

The shop said the new section was added “due to popular demand.”

“If you’re looking to tie your own or buy pre-tied, we’ve got you covered,” Grumpy’s Tackle said in its announcement.

For newcomers interested in trying the sport, the staff is taking a practical approach.

“If you’re looking to get into the sport, we are not an expert shop by any means, but we have everything you need to get started,” the shop said.

Continuing a Jersey Shore tradition

Grumpy’s Tackle has long been a fixture in the Seaside Park fishing community, serving surfcasters, boat anglers and visitors for decades. The business recently mourned the loss of longtime owner Tom Hansen, whose passion for fishing and commitment to helping customers made the shop a destination for generations of Jersey Shore anglers. Hansen passed away last August, he was the “Grumpy” behind the store’s name.

The addition of fly fishing equipment marks another chapter for the iconic tackle shop as it continues serving both longtime customers and a new generation looking to explore different ways to fish the Jersey Shore.
