Levittown man charged after phone snatch turns violent in Pemberton Township
PEMBERTON TOWNSHIP, NJ – A request to borrow a cell phone late Wednesday night escalated into a struggle and robbery on Trenton Road, ending with the arrest of a 27-year-old Levittown man, police said.
Officers responded at approximately 10:46 p.m. to the 100 block of Trenton Road for a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, police made contact with the victim and observed minor abrasions to his hand.
Investigators determined the suspect asked to use the victim’s cell phone to contact a friend. After the phone call was made, a physical struggle ensued over possession of the device. During the incident, the suspect stole multiple items and fled the scene.
Police later identified the suspect as John Chadwick, 27, of Levittown, Pennsylvania. Officers located him at a nearby apartment complex, where he was taken into custody.
Chadwick was charged with robbery by force, shoplifting, simple assault, criminal mischief and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was processed and lodged at the Burlington County Jail.
The investigation was conducted by Pemberton Township Patrolman Evan Shagg.
The charges are accusations, and Chadwick is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
