Suspect accused of spitting on officers during custody

Cranford, NJ — A late-night investigation into a stolen vehicle escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving an officer injured and a suspect facing multiple charges.

The incident unfolded around 11:55 p.m. April 29 in the 200 block of South Avenue East, where officers located a stolen 2013 Nissan Rogue parked at a business.

Police said the vehicle was occupied when officers approached, leading to the arrest of 24-year-old Woodberlens Jules of Newark.

During the arrest, authorities said Jules engaged in a physical struggle with officers and continued to act combatively while in custody. Police reported that he spit on several officers and later assaulted another officer during transport to a hospital, causing injury.

Jules was charged with receiving stolen property, aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension, and refusal to submit fingerprints.

He was taken to the Essex County Jail, where he is awaiting a detention hearing.
