Man shot by girlfriend’s son dies months later in Maryland

Man shot in June dies months later as Silver Spring case ruled homicide

SILVER SPRING, MD — A man shot in a residential neighborhood earlier this year has died from his injuries, and the case has now been ruled a homicide, according to an update released Wednesday by Montgomery County Police.

Derrick Jones, 40, was shot on June 19 at approximately 1:11 p.m. in the 30 block of Hunters Gate Court. When officers arrived, they found Jones suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Before being transported to a trauma center, Jones identified his alleged shooter as his girlfriend’s son, 20-year-old Julian Rogers of Silver Spring.

Rogers was located shortly after the incident and arrested without incident. Police recovered a 9mm privately manufactured firearm equipped with an extended magazine and a live round in the chamber.

Initially charged with attempted second-degree murder and related offenses, Rogers has been held at the Montgomery County Detention Center since his arrest.

Jones survived the initial shooting and remained under medical care until September 28, when he died at a rehabilitation facility. An autopsy conducted the next day by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that his death resulted from the injuries sustained in the June shooting.

On Tuesday, December 2, the OCME officially ruled the death a homicide.

Montgomery County homicide detectives are continuing the investigation, and the State’s Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to determine whether a superseding indictment for first-degree murder will be filed against Rogers.
