California man’s $50K Powerball win doubles after ticket review in Virginia

Richmond, VA – A California man visiting Virginia was in for a double surprise after discovering his Powerball prize was worth $100,000 — not $50,000 — thanks to a $1 add-on that turned his win into six figures.

Daniel Green of Folsom, California, initially believed he had scored a $50,000 prize in the September 6 Powerball drawing. But after checking his ticket more closely, he learned he had purchased the Power Play option, which doubled his prize to $100,000.

Green purchased his winning ticket using Easy Pick at the Wawa located at 5231 Brook Road in Richmond. The ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers and the red Powerball number — a combination that typically wins $50,000. But with Power Play activated, and the multiplier for that drawing being 2x, the total jumped to $100,000.

The winning numbers for the September 6 drawing were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and the Powerball number was 17.

Powerball drawings are held three times a week, with overall odds of winning any prize listed at 1 in 25. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.

All profits from the Virginia Lottery support K-12 public education. The winning ticket was purchased in Richmond, which received more than $22.5 million in lottery funding for schools last fiscal year. Statewide, the Lottery generated over $901 million for education in Fiscal Year 2025, contributing roughly 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
