Trooper saves choking baby in dramatic roadside moment

Elkton, MD – A routine traffic stop turned into an emergency response Saturday morning when a Maryland State Trooper acted quickly to save a choking infant brought to him by frantic parents, according to state police.

Trooper First Class Nicholas Warren, a seven-year member of the Maryland State Police assigned to the North East Barrack, was conducting a traffic stop around 9:44 a.m. on Feb. 14 in the area of Walnut Drive in Elkton. As he walked back toward his patrol vehicle, another car pulled alongside him and the driver called out that their baby was choking.

Trooper Warren immediately requested emergency medical services and removed the infant from the vehicle to begin lifesaving first aid. Following his training, he administered back blows until the obstruction cleared and the infant began breathing again.

Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly afterward to evaluate the child. Police stated that the trooper’s rapid response, training, and calm actions prevented what could have been a far more serious outcome.
