Mystery woman sought after Newark shooting leaves teen wounded

Police have arrested a juvenile suspect and now want help identifying a woman seen at the scene.

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark police are asking for the public’s help identifying a woman who may have information about a shooting that left a juvenile with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, officers responded at approximately 2:38 p.m. on July 2 after a ShotSpotter alert near 15th Avenue and Hayes Street.

When officers arrived, they found ballistic evidence and discovered a parked vehicle had been struck by gunfire, but no victims were at the scene.

Police later learned that a juvenile male had arrived at University Hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Investigators used surveillance video to identify the juvenile as a suspect. He has since been arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a firearm by a minor.

During the investigation, detectives also observed a woman at the scene and are asking the public to help identify her. Police released her photograph but have not identified her or described her role in the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Newark Police Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the Newark Department of Public Safety website.

The charges against the juvenile are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
