New York Suspends Congestion Tax on New Jersey Commuters

NEW YORK, NY — Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday the suspension of the congestion pricing initiative slated to commence soon in Manhattan’s Central Business District. Governor Hochul cited the potential for numerous unintended consequences as the rationale behind her decision, prompting her to instruct the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to pause the program indefinitely.

Governor Phil Murphy expressed gratitude towards Governor Kathy Hochul for halting the congestion pricing plan in Manhattan’s Central Business District. “I want to thank Governor Hochul for pausing the implementation of congestion pricing in Manhattan’s Central Business District,” Murphy said. “Although we have had a difference of opinion with our colleagues in New York on congestion pricing implementation, we have always had a shared vision for growing our regional economy, investing in infrastructure, protecting our environment, and creating good-paying jobs on both sides of the Hudson River. We fully embrace the notion that the success of Manhattan is inextricably linked to the prosperity of the entire Tri-State Area.

Acknowledging the challenges, Governor Hochul expressed that the pause was essential due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on working families and the economic health of New York City.
