NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Department of Public Safety has announced a new partnership with Amazon to provide secure package delivery lockers at four city police precincts, giving residents a safer way to receive online orders.
Officials said the initiative aims to reduce package theft and provide convenient pickup options for residents across Newark’s neighborhoods.
The lockers are now available at the following precincts:
• 5th Precinct: 480 Clinton Avenue (South Ward)
• 6th Precinct: 491 Irvington Avenue (West Ward)
• 7th Precinct: 159 N. 10th Street (North Ward)
• 9th/Metro Precinct: 22 Franklin Street (Central Ward)
How the locker system works
When an order is delivered, Amazon sends the customer a secure access code by email. Recipients use the code at the locker’s terminal to retrieve their packages.
If a parcel is not picked up within three days, Amazon removes it to make space for new deliveries. Customers whose packages are removed receive full refunds automatically.
Promoting safety and convenience
Police officials said the collaboration is designed to combat “porch piracy” — a growing problem in many urban areas — by offering residents secure access points for deliveries in each major Newark ward.
