ADAMS COUNTY, PA — An Adams County judge has denied a request to reduce the prison sentence of Jere Bagenstose, who was convicted earlier this year of voluntary manslaughter in the 1984 death of his then-wife, Maryann Bagenstose.
Senior Judge John Kuhn, who presided over the trial, issued an opinion on July 15 rejecting the defense’s claim that the sentence of four to 10 years was “manifestly excessive and clearly unreasonable.” The judge stated the sentence was appropriate, not solely because of the killing, but because Bagenstose disposed of Maryann’s body in a manner that ensured it was never recovered.
“These actions demonstrate an extra layer of callousness and heartlessness,” Judge Kuhn wrote, emphasizing the prolonged suffering inflicted on Maryann’s loved ones over four decades.
Maryann Bagenstose vanished from the couple’s Pequea Township home on June 5, 1984. Her remains have never been found. A jury convicted Jere Bagenstose in April following a two-week trial.
Prosecutors argued at sentencing that Bagenstose showed no remorse and evaded justice for 40 years. The judge dismissed mitigating factors raised by the defense, including Bagenstose’s health, work history, and family obligations, as insufficient to warrant leniency.
